Rookie came to A Different Breed about a year ago from a puppy mill that had closed its doors. He was so scared he would huddle in the corner of his crate and we had a hard time even getting him to come out. During his second week with ADB, he jumped off a chair (like dogs do every day) and broke both bones in his front leg. The vet said that he had been so malnourished at the puppy mill his bones were just like toothpicks. They didn’t believe they could fix the break and were convinced that they would have to amputate. However, one of the Vets at Alma Animal Hospital was determined to save his leg. After hours of surgery he was sent home with one of our foster families with just a 50% chance of his leg healing.
Rookie was later adopted by his foster family and is virtually unrecognizable as the same dog that came to us a year ago. His leg healed perfectly and he has grown into quite the handsome young man. His family also has an 8 year old female Chiweenie named Molly, and they are inseparable. Molly used to suffer from extreme separation anxiety when her parents would leave, but she is now a perfectly happy dog because her brother is always by her side (literally)!
